                     A Sketch of the Hakka Monthly  

     The Hakka Monthly, entitled Hakka Affairs Monthly before 1990, was first published in1987 with aim of reawakening Hakka spirit by calling on the Hakkas to take pride in their ethnic identity.  In 1988 the magazine organized a ”give us back our native tongue ”march, in which more than 10,000 Hakkas from around Taiwan took to the steets of Taipei to demand the government to abolish its Mandarin-only policy so that the voice of the voice of the major local dialect, including Southern Min, Hakka ,and those of the aborigine , can have a chance to be heard.  In response to the request, the government started Hakka TV newscasts and programs .In addition ,more and more Hakkas took the initiatives to set up Hakka radio stataions and Hakka organizations in the hope of raising the visibility of the Hakka people at home and abroad.  Since its inception, The Hakka Monthly has been very active in hosting various kinds of activicties, such as summer camp and academic seminar.  It is considered the most important magazine in the word for those interested in the history,culture ,language , and life and activties of the Hakka people. It’s published in Taipei ,Taiwan ,and is available worldwide.
